On February 17-18, Tractus Asia’s Director, John Evans, and Myanmar Country Manager, Martin Jancik, joined leading business executives from Honeywell, MetLife, Magna International, and Dow Chemical as well as entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and government officials at AMCHAM Myanmar’s third annual international economic forum. The event provided a platform for attendees to observe firsthand and discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead as Myanmar ushers in a new era of development following the November 2015 elections.
The two-day event began with a visit to Thilawa Special Economic Zone, which was launched in September 2015 and features attractive SEZ incentives for imports and exports. Located on the outskirts of Yangon, this 2,500 hectares (6,200 acres) SEZ aims to be a major hub for various kinds of manufacturing as well as the production of construction materials and garments. The first phase of the SEZ is slated to complete in early 2016 and is the first fully built economic zone in Myanmar.
On day two, participants gathered at Chatrium Royal Lake Hotel for remarks by the U.S. Embassy on the current political environment followed by a series of panel discussions on energy and infrastructure, taxation, and legal reform in Myanmar.
